Jo Lewzey is a yoga teacher based in San Francisco, California. Her classes feature alignment-based asana, pranayama, and meditation. She offers public classes and private sessions throughout the Bay Area.

2015-03-22 01.49.41-3Jo discovered yoga in 2002 when she moved from her native London to San Francisco. Jo has a long history of working with the body – as a young adult she embarked on a dance career by attending a professional school and subsequently travelled Europe with a dance company for five years.

Jo felt called to work with people in a way that would help them lead stronger, healthier lives.

Upon moving to the U.S. she became a personal trainer, doing one-on-one work while also teaching adult ballet classes. At the same time, she started taking yoga classes for herself. At first, she tried everything – hot yoga, Ashtanga, Vinyasa – and in 2006 she decided to delve deeper into yoga and enrolled in the 200-hour teacher training with Yolanda Bain at The Mindful Body. After the course she began teaching a weekly class. While Jo loved being a personal trainer, it wasn’t her true calling. In 2010 she met the teacher that changed everything for her, Maritza – a longtime yogi who started as an Iyengar teacher and moved over to Anusara. Maritza’s style focuses on alignment of the body within each pose, slow and precise movement, and a therapeutic approach to practice. Maritza also has over thirty years experience with Vipassana meditation. Jo studied with Maritza as a student for two years in her annual three-month-long Yoga immersion and then assisted in the training for another three years, completing well over 500 hours of study. Maritza’s teachings truly changed Jo from the inside out and completely changed her teaching.

Jo also completed a 300-hour teacher-training with Noah Maze in Los Angeles. He teaches alignment based yoga, in-depth Asana sequencing, anatomy, and Hindu Mythology. For Jo, yoga is a way to connect with herself on a deeper level. It is a way to quiet down the noise, soften and release the resistances in the body, learn how to focus the mind and find a deep well of calm and well being within, no matter what is going on outside. She loves teaching because it constantly asks her to be the best version of herself. She loves the class environment, sharing her heart and soul with an amazing group of people.

Yoga Class Schedule

9:30am to 11:00am – Yoga Mountain Studio Fairfax (Marin)
12:15pm to 1:15pm – Yoga Tree Hayes (San Francisco)

9:15am to 11:15am (2 hour class) – The Mindful Body (San Francisco)
12:15pm to 1:15pm – Yoga Tree Hayes (San Francisco)

9:30am to 11:00am – Yoga Mountain Studio Fairfax (Marin)
6:00pm to 7:30pm  – The Mindful Body (San Francisco) This class has an optional 30 minute Meditation afterwards.

About Jo’s Classes

Jo creates a safe space for students to fully be themselves – a place where they can let go, become vulnerable, and at the same time experience their strengths and potential. Her class environment is like a living workshop where students can ask questions and learn something new in each class.

She teaches proper alignment in yoga poses and also hopes to teach students about yoga as a precious and invaluable healing practice of the body, mind, and heart and about how these tools can be used in aspects of our lives. She strives to instill in her students a trusting and healthy relationship with their bodies and relief from long held pain and injury.

Lastly, she hopes that they begin to witness greatness within themselves and feel stronger and more equipped to face life with love and integrity. Jo teaches an all levels class – everyone is welcome to join! As students continue to practice with her they’ll gradually build knowledge of the poses, strength, and endurance. Her classes are not about being perfect or overly flexible in the poses – everyone is there to learn and grow together.

Private Sessions

I offer private yoga sessions to my students. Privates are well-suited to students who want one-on-one attention to improve a specific area of practice, for those working with injuries or physical limitations, for those new to yoga who want to gain foundational knowledge, or for students with very busy schedules who need to practice at a specific time.
